Promoting Environment Stewardship
The key word in this expected learning result is “promote.” Students can learn by seeing others do what they are being told to do themselves. If we wish to have students become environment stewards, we must also show that we do so ourselves. Presently, the recycle effort at school needs much improvement. In the coming year, facilitating a better awareness of recycling in the class and around campus can be helped by the simple addition of bins campus wide. It has been the aim of the Green Club at PVHS to promote this effort, but unless all SLC’s at PVHS get involved, we will not be true to our word of promoting environment stewardship. How can we if we do not do so ourselves?
Bike to Work/School Day

Each fall, PVHS has held a bike to work/school day to promote alternate transportation. Students do walk to school, but traffic into PVHS is congested and efforts to get more students to use non-vehicle methodsto getting to school is difficult.
Community Service and Internships
This is an area that needs to be further examined so that they tie in more closely with school wide goals. Ninth and tenth grade levels will have minimum community service requirements be a component of class credit this coming year.
PVHS Garden –Organic Farming & Composting
This summer and early fall, the National Environment Education Foundation grant will enable us to get the garden further developed. It is a hope that we have students harvest the vegetables to provide potential additional selections of natural organic food to the offerings of food service on campus. A possible culinary class after school may be the means by which we accomplish this task. In addition, the opportunity to show students healthy means of nutrition as well as recycling though compost matter through the garden is an ideal aim to work towards.
SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM-LANGUAGE ARTS
Thinking About Carbon Footprints As part of the summer school program this year, students were asked to think about how they can reduce their contribution to carbon emissions in the atmosphere. While reading the novel ISLANDS about global warming’s impact on a fictional future, they considered how they can help contribute in their own part less to the problem. The following are some reflections on what they might do. See Student Work on Carbon Footprints below:
